The success of your business heavily relies on the attitude and actions of your staff. What they do reflects you and your ability to motivate and lead.

If you want to achieve all of your business goals then it is only possible through good people management and their continual development. To make sure you make the most of your staff and their potential, follow these ten simple techniques.

1. Listen to ideas

Your staff will have plenty of ideas for improvements within your business – just ask them. By listening to their opinions and suggestions, you will able to take them on board and implement them where and when is deemed necessary. When you involve your staff in decisions, you build loyalty and commitment to you and their job.
Don’t be offended by negative criticism, respect their honesty as it shows how much they care about the success of your business – these are the type of staff you need.

2. Great Expectations

Take half an hour or so to sit down with each of your employees and together write their performance objectives. Make sure that you are both clear on your expectations - you can’t expect a great performance from them unless you both communicate successfully. Reiterate these expectations verbally every couple of weeks or so by asking how they are getting on.

3. Give Feedback

Make sure you give your staff regular feedback so you can tell them when they have done well. You will find that by praising your staff they will continually want to work well to please you in the future. The appreciation will mean a lot to them, so take the time to say ‘well done.’
On the other hand, if something goes wrong, ask them why and then learn from this mistake. If you deal with the mistake right away, you will be able to avoid making the same mistake the next time around.

4. Say ‘Thank You’

Similarly to saying, ‘well done,’ saying ‘thank you,’ can be just as effective in getting more good work from your staff. ” When you reward and acknowledge good behaviours, you get more of the same. Recognition and appreciation is one of the most satisfying things for an employee.

5. Be Part of the Team

By spending time in the office and always having time to speak with your employees, you are letting them know that you are part of the team and that you are working just as hard as they are in order to get the job done. It’s better to work together than having people work for you.
